Are custom orthotics different from over-the-counter shoe inserts?

Custom orthotics look like the heel pads and shoe inserts you buy at the grocery, drug, or sporting goods store. The difference is that your podiatrist prescribes them, and a lab custom-makes them for you. Since custom orthotics support the unique structure of your feet, they’re more effective than over-the-counter (OTC) alternatives.

What types of foot and ankle problems benefit from custom orthotics?

The Global Podiatry team uses custom orthotics to treat various foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Bursitis
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Hammertoe
  • Flatfoot
  • High arches
  • Sports injuries
  • Heel pain
  • Plantar fasciitis

Sometimes, custom orthotics are prescribed to treat congenital abnormalities like underdeveloped leg and foot muscles.

Are there different kinds of custom orthotics?

The Global Podiatry team offers several types of custom orthotics, including:

Soft (accommodative) orthotics

Soft orthotics provide your feet and ankles with extra padding. They’re bulky and feature cushioning materials. Due to their size, these orthotics often require prescription footwear, like diabetic shoes. They take pressure off painful areas like open wounds, corns, and calluses.

Rigid (functional) orthotics

Rigid orthotics are stiff and inflexible. These orthotics are made from plastic or carbon fiber and slip inside closed-toed shoes. These orthotics support the arch of your foot and reduce pain caused by structural abnormalities like flatfoot and high arches.

What does getting custom orthotics involve?

Getting custom orthotics at Global Podiatry takes two appointments spaced several weeks apart.

On your first visit, your Global Podiatry provider completes a podiatry exam and takes three-dimensional (3D) digital scans of your feet. The scans act as a mold, ensuring that your orthotics will fit perfectly. Your provider sends your scans to a podiatry lab where the technicians create a custom pair of soft or rigid orthotics.

When the podiatry lab finishes your custom orthotics, you return to Global Podiatry and try them on. They make adjustments, if necessary, and explain how to keep your orthotics in top condition.

How long do custom orthotics last?

Custom orthotics last 3-5 years* on average, but they can last longer, depending on how much wear-and-tear they undergo. Contact Global Podiatry immediately if your feet and ankles begin hurting again.
